Mistakes and failures are a part of life.  Albert Einstein said, “The man who never made a mistake never made anything.”

Do you let fear of failing hold you back?  Have you ever made a mistake and just weren’t able to move past it?  Mistakes are proof that you are trying, and trying and failing is much better than never trying in the first place.

Having the right mindset will allow your mistakes to work in your favor, rather than limit your potential.

We all have heard how Thomas Edison took 1,000 tries to invent the light bulb.  Each time he learned something, and changed his approach.

Basketball season is just around the corner and I’m getting ready to prepare my team for all that awaits us over the coming months.  One thing I try to stress every year is that mistake are a part of sports, and life.

Phil Jackson said, “No one plays this or any game perfectly.  It’s the guy who recovers from his mistakes who wins.”   How well do you recover from your mistakes?

A hard fall just means a high bounce, if you’re made of the right stuff!

Here are three things I tell my team that you should do with a mistake:

1.  Admit it

The first thing is to own up and take responsibility.  Be quick to admit your mistakes.   It’s easy to blame others, but remember to blame is to be lame!

2. Learn from it

Mistakes and failures can be profitable if we are willing to learn from them.  There’s really no such thing as losing, there’s winning and learning.  It’s all a matter of perspective.

3.  Forget it

Move on!  If you’ve taken responsibility, and learned something then there is no need to dwell on it.  It doesn’t do any good to keep bringing it back up over and over again.  It’s time to let it go.

One of the most famous Michael Jordan quotes is this: “In my career I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots. I’ve lost almost 300 games.  26 times I’ve been entrusted to take the game winning shot, and missed. I’ve failed over and over again in my life.  And that is why I succeed.”

Don’t let the fear of making mistakes keep you from trying.  And don’t allow your mistakes to control you.  You’ve got greatness inside and your mistakes are just a part of the process to realizing that greatness.

When it comes to your mistakes: Admit them, learn from them, and then forget them!

You’ve got what it takes!
